The Carinthian Lakes - Austria’s Cycling Paradise
Day 1:
Arrival. Transfer from Salzburg airport to our base hotel in Spittal.
Day 2:
Spittal. After breakfast, we personally equip you with your bicycles ensuring a perfect individual fit. The day is then yours to explore Spittal and its surrounding area near the picturesque Lake Millstätt. We recommend a gentle cycle excursion to the lake shore for its gorgeous beaches. Back in the town itself, the splendid 16th century Italian palace Schloß Porcia is a must-see. To the south, Goldeck Mountain reaches a dizzy 2142m - take the cable car to enjoy wonderful views from its peak.
Day 3:
Spittal to Egg am Faakersee. The Drau Valley cycle route leads downstream through a broad glacial valley to Paternion. This pretty village, nestling between sunny mountain slopes and shady woodland, includes a charming pilgrimage church and 16th century castle. After passing through the historic town of Villach, we continue to Lake Faakersee, one of Carinthia's finest. 26 miles.
Day 4:
Egg am Faakersee. With summer temperatures of 26C and an idyllic location, it's easy to understand why Faakersee is among the region’s best bathing lakes. Pretty villages are sprinkled along the shoreline while quiet lanes and tracks splinter into the breathtakingly beautiful countryside. It’s time to enjoy a little light cycling and some serious relaxation!
Day 5:
Egg am Faakersee to Feldkirchen. Leaving the Drau Valley cycle route, our tour continues along the southern shore of the Ossiacher See, a serene lake cradled between steeply wooded slopes, with spectacular views to the Gerlitzen peak. The half-way point of today’s tour is the village of Ossiach, featuring a Benedictine Abbey dating back to the 11th century. Part of the building has been transformed into a hotel - the perfect place for lunch. Our route continues along the Tiebel Valley to Feldkirchen. 22 miles.
Day 6:
Feldkirchen. Set amid rolling farmland, Feldkirchen's roots date to the Middle Ages - the old town is a maze of alleyways and narrow lanes, with historic buildings to discover at each turn. The quiet byways south-east of Feldkirchen are a cycling paradise - sleepy hamlets and inviting lakes are framed by high peaks as we ride past.
Day 7:
Feldkirchen to St Veit an der Glan. Choose between a gentle meander along the pretty Glan Valley or a slightly more adventurous ride through several miles of track into a secluded valley and the heart of a wilder landscape. 18 or 26 miles.
